One of the original legends of the Australian surfing industry, this pioneer surfboard manufacturer was born and raised in Bondi. Scott was body surfing with his father before he could walk. At the age of six he started to stand up and ride the waves.

In his youth Scott was both a professional speedway driver and Australian Amateur Bantam Weight Champion. After narrowly missing out on competing in the 1956 Olympic Games, he continued boxing in Canada and the northern US on TV, for 5 years.

During the time Scott spent in North America he surfed big waves in Mexico, Hawaii and California, before finally returning home in 1957.

Scott began the company Scott Dillon Surfboards in Brookvale in 1961, making longboards The first boards were Malibu-style, made of balsa wood, which preceded foam boards. He continued with this until 1967.

Other manufacturers at that time were Gordon Woods, Barry Bennett, Bill Wallace and Keyo. A group that later became known as ‘The Bookvale Six’.

After pioneering the first polyurethane foam surfboard blank, radical changes saw the emergence of the short-board era and Scott closed up shop and moved to Coffs Harbour, where he later established The Legends Surf Museum. In 2004 Scott was inducted into The Surfing Hall of Fame.
